BRITA Filters

How regularly should I change the filters in my BRITA product?

BRITA MAXTRA+ Cartridges

To make sure that your BRITA product is working at its best and producing the best quality water for you, it is recommended that you change the BRITA Maxtra filter cartridge at least every four weeks. This is to ensure that the filter cartridge contains all the necessary ions and activated carbon that prevents limescale and substances from entering your water.

If you have hard water in your area, the frequency of filter changes will be more regular due to the increased amount of carbonate that creates limescale build up within your water. If you are within an area with water hardness, it is recommended that you change the water filter after 100 litres of water has been consumed.

BRITA Fill&Go Filter Discs

The Fill&Go filter discs for your BRITA Original Fill&Go Bottle has impressive filter technology to significantly reduce chlorine and other substances within your water. The additional extra of these filters is that you can use them on the go! To get the best water filtration, it is recommended that the filter is changed weekly.

What is the life-span of the unused BRITA filters?

The shelf life of an unused, packaged filter is indefinite. Filters should be kept in the sealed BRITA bag and stored in a cool, dry place until you’re ready to use them.

What is the filtration process of the BRITA filters?

The standard BRITA filters have a sieve and bottom filter mesh that screen out larger particulate matter from the water. Activated carbon granules act like a sponge. An Ion Exchange Resin acts like a magnet to attract and hold the contaminants.

BRITA bottle filter removes substances by passing the water through a carbon filter element designed to remove specific substances under low pressure. The bottle filter contains a proprietary blend of activated carbon and a binder that holds all the ingredients together. Water passes through a porous filter where chlorine (taste and odor) is adsorbed and broken down on the surface of the activated carbon.

Why are my BRITA filters damp?

It is quite normal for BRITA cartridges to appear damp or wet when removed from their sterile packaging. For hygiene reasons, all BRITA cartridges are subjected to a process of steam sterilisation during production. The BRITA filter cartridges are treated with high-pressure steam following production. After steam sterilisation, the filter cartridges are foil-wrapped in a “clean room”, where subsequent contamination of the product is inhibited.

Random samples are taken regularly in order to monitor the quality of the sterilisation process. Cartridges are taken out from the production line each day for testing. In addition to the company’s own production control system, an officially appointed sworn expert monitors the production division, i.e. a microbiological examination and assessment of all production facilities and rooms is conducted at regular intervals.

On account of these very extensive microbiological examinations – from the raw materials to steam sterilisation of the filter cartridges and packaging in a clean room – BRITA can assure consumers, that the cartridges leave the company’s production site in a hygienically impeccable condition. The steam process can often leave sterile water droplets within the cartridge and its packaging.

Why are there black particles in my water?

The BRITA filter cartridges are made up of activated carbon that is made of coconut shells. This can sometimes lead to slight abrasion when in contact with the carbon within the filtered water. The black particles are therefore completely harmless and it will not effect the filtration of water within your BRITA product.

To avoid black particles from becoming present within your water you must prepare the BRITA filter properly by:

  1. Fill your jug with water or a bowl.
  2. Immerse the filter cartridge into the jug or bowl and shake it vigorously underwater and allow it to soak for 30 minutes so that the air bubbles are removed.
  3. Place the cleaned filter into your BRITA jug
  4. Put through a few litres of water before using your BRITA product.

If this does not stop the presence of black particles within your filtered water, please continue to shake the filter underwater and re-install the filter. Please then flush through a few litres of water until clear.

How does the MicroDisc filter work?

The MicroDisc fits into the BRITA fill&go water bottle. Thanks to the ActivSelect Technology exclusively developed by BRITA, you will get 150 litres of freshly filtered, great tasting water from just one MicroDisc, which lasts four weeks. The MicroDisc is made from activated carbon that is compressed enabling the bottle to have a consistently high filtration performance, reducing the presence of chlorine and other substances that impair the taste and smell of drinking water as well as removing fine particles. It leaves minerals such as magnesium and calcium in the water.

Which filter cartridges does a fill&go Vital or Active take?

Please use the new MicroDisc only.
